1950 Mercury Eight

While the Mercury Eight remains basically unchanged, the year sees the production of the millionth automobile bearing the name of the Roman god - a four-door sport sedan. Furthermore, Mercury is chosen to provide the pacecar for the Indianapolis 500 race, in May 1950.

Mercury's 1950 range includes a single line: Mercury Eight.

Mercury Eight
Modifications are scarce this year, Mercury limiting its efforts to slightly altering the chrome decorations around its cars’ bodies, and designing a totally new dashboard. A three-seat coupe returns to the range this year, while the more traditional six-seat car is renamed “club coupe”.

Mercury Eight Monterey
Worried about the popularity of the new hardtop coupes introduced by its rivals General Motors and Chrysler, Ford has determined that modifying the structure of its present models to offer such a version would be unreasonably expensive. A stopgap has been found in the form of luxurious coupes with either vinyl or canvas covering their roofs, giving the appearance of convertibles. Such an option package is called Monterey in Mercury’s range.
