1952 Mercury Full-Sizes

Nineteen fifty-two sees Mercury unveiling some totally new cars, split for the first time into two distinct series. The old "bathtub" design is out, replaced by a fresh and elegant look that is again borrowed from Lincoln. After being distanced by its rivals, Mercury finally introduces its first hardtop coupe this year. That's about time, as this new type of body is rapidly gaining popularity.

Mercury's 1952 range includes two lines: Mercury Custom, Mercury Monterey.

Mercury Custom
All the models from the Ford group are entirely redesigned this year. Though wheelbase remains the same, this year’s Mercurys are shorter and slightly lighter which, combined with a more powerful engine, promises good performances in touch with the company’s reputation. The new bodies follow all of Detroit’s fashions, with an aggressive front end and elongated rear wings, a massive element combining the grille and the front bumper, and a lot of chrome. For the first time, Mercury proposes two series of cars, the Custom being the most affordable.

Mercury Monterey
The Monterey is no longer a simple package, but a line of Mercury cars in its own right. The difference with the Custom is principally cosmetic, a Monterey’s driver enjoying a two-tone paint, larger wheelcovers, chrome rocker panels, fender skirts and a leather-and-vinyl upholstery. Mercury’s first hardtop coupe is exclusive to this series.
