1949 Lincoln Full-Sizes

In spring 1948, Ford already releases its new models for 1949. The somewhat upright style of the pre-war Lincolns gives way to an elegant “bathtub” design. Though roughly similar, there are two different Lincolns this year: a plain “Lincoln” which shares its bodies with the new Mercurys, and a posh and long “Cosmopolitan”. During the year, an optional Hydra-Matic automatic transmission - provided by Ford’s rival General Motors - is added to the option list.

Lincoln
Simply called “Lincoln”, the base model features rear “suicide” doors on the sedan, and retains a split windshield.

  1. The first car I can remember my dad owning was a used 49 Cosmopolitan 4 door fastback in black. It had the three on the tree - but with overdrive. The hydraulic windows almost never worked, but when they did they were powerful enough to cut your fingers off. :)
