1972 Lincoln Continental Mark IV

A brand new Continental “Mark” is unveiled this year. It sits on a longer chassis, but retains all of the styling gimmicks of the previous generation - hidden headlights, upright front grille with standing emblem, boot spare tyre “hump”.

1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV

The most obvious difference between the 1973 Mark IV and last year’s is the adoption of the big “5-mph” bumper, which forces to reduce the height of the grille. Optional in 1972 for widely ordered, the “opera” windows, these oval openings in the thick rear roof pillar, are now made standard.

1976 Lincoln Continental Mark IV

Lincoln keeps its Mark IV unchanged, but multiplies the “Designer Series” to attract buyers: Bill Blass, Cartier, Emilio Pucci and Hubert de Givenchy all propose a specific outside decoration with matching upholstery.

1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V

This is a remarkable feat the Lincoln engineers have performed, redesigning the Continental Mark as a much lighter, yet equally large model as its predecessors, from which it retains all the traditional trademarks. Base engine is now down to the “400” V-8.

The new Lincoln Continental Mark V seldom changes this year, though a temporary “Diamond Jubilee Edition”, launched to commemorate Ford’s seventy-five years of existence, is added to the traditional plethora of Designer Series.

1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V

Due to disappear next year in favour of a downsized model, the Lincoln Continental Mark V is available, as the Continental, as a commemorative “Collector’s Series” this year. The smaller “400” V-8, still displacing 6.6 litres, is the only available engine left.

1976 Lincoln Continental

The 1976 Lincoln Continental is virtually identical to the model face-lifted last year. Equipment is surprisingly simplified; some items that were still standard last year are now made optional, or are available through the “Town Car” and “Town Coupe” packages.

1979 Lincoln Continental

The Lincoln Continental remains the very last of the large traditional full-size automobiles from Detroit, but its own downsizing is near, so a new Collector’s Series celebrates the event to come. The anti-economical “460” V-8 disappears, leaving the “400”, helplessly unable to provide decent performance to such a heavy car, as the only engine choice.

1978 Lincoln Continental

The strait, horizontal lines of the Continental are now ruptured by new open wheel arches at the rear. Efforts have been made to improve the economy of the base V-8, but the optional 7.5-litre “460” remains a gas-guzzling monster - it is not even allowed for sale in the state of California.

1977 Lincoln Continental

Some had pinpointed the resemblance between the Continental’s grille and Rolls-Royce’s traditional one; this is even truer now that the big Lincoln receives a narrower unit in chrome, with an ornament standing on top of it. Unfortunately, this new arrangement leaves the bare headlight covers quite lonely on the large front end, conferring a rather odd look to the face-lifted car.

1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III

Introduced during last spring as a 1969 model, the Continental Mark III obviously remain similar to these early cars. Nevertheless, an important addition is made to the option list during the year: the new Sure-Track anti-lock brake system (mounted on the rear wheels only), that has been developed by Ford in cooperation with Kelsey-Hayes.

1968 Lincoln Continental Mark III

In spring 1968, Lincoln introduces a new prestigious Continental “Mark” as an early 1969 model. It bears the “Mark III” moniker, Lincoln deliberately erasing from its history the oversized Mark III to V from the late Fifties to remember exclusively the ground-breaking Mark I and II. A luxurious “personal” coupe, the Continental Mark III is fitted with a new, more efficient V-8 engine. Its elegant body features the traditional Continental “hump” on its boot, and hideaway headlights: interestingly, Lincoln was already planning such a device on its… 1949 models - it apparently took two decades to perfect this system!

1974 Lincoln Continental

The Lincoln Continental receives a face-lift made necessary by the need of adding the now mandatory “5-mph” bumpers. Front turn signals are of a wraparound design. Now stretching almost six metres in length above the asphalt, the Continental is undeniably a big car!

Again, modifications are limited to the front end: a new grille with crisscross pattern and an ornament on the bonnet. Power is now computed following SAE’s standards which, combined with stricter emission regulations, causes a sharp drop in advertised output.
