1973 Mercury Full-Sizes

For my first post, I'd like to start with the 1973-78 full-size Mercurys, for sentimental reasons.

Introduced for model year 1973, the new Mercurys are more squarish and formal, with the Marquis copying once again the Lincoln Continental's style. Big 5-mph bumpers are now fitted both at the front and rear, increasing the massive look of the cars. Under the new skin though, they keep the same chassis as last year, with now an automatic transmission as standard equipment on all models.

Mercury's 1973 full-size range includes five lines: Mercury Monterey, Mercury Monterey Custom, Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marquis Brougham and a separate Mercury Marquis Colony Park.

Mercury Monterey
Mercury renews its range of full-size models this year. As it was previously these are divided into four lines, the Monterey being the most affordable. It is basically a Ford made fancier, which enjoys as standard equipment a 5.8-litre engine, a “Select-Shift” automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Station wagons are built on the very same chassis as the Ford, though all other body styles benefit from an extended wheelbase.

Mercury Monterey Custom
For a little extra, American customers can purchase a plusher Monterey, the Custom, fitted with better appointments and powered by the larger 6.6-litre engine.

Mercury Marquis
While the Monterey remains close to the full-size cars proposed by Ford, the Marquis has been designed to mimic the posh Lincoln’s style, sporting a larger grille with a finer mesh, a free-standing hood ornament, hideaway headlights, standard fender skirts covering the rear wheels on coupes and sedans (these being optional with the Montereys) and more chrome overall. The pillared sedan is complemented by a pilarless hardtop sedan within the Marquis line.

Mercury Marquis Brougham
A tasteful yet cheaper alternative to the expensive Lincoln Continental, the Marquis Brougham adds to the Marquis’ standard equipment such niceties as power windows and more elegant wheel covers.

Mercury Marquis Colony Park
Mercury’s most luxurious station wagon is, once again this year, the Colony Park. Its equipment is similar to that found in the Marquis Brougham, though its standard engine is the 6.6-litre one. Nevertheless, it remains very close to Ford’s station wagons, except for the Mercury front end grafted onto it.
