1972 Mercury Full-Sizes

Apart from a new grille pattern and the adoption or front disc brakes as standard equipment, the Mercurys do not change much: Montereys still look like big Fords, while Marquis are small Lincolns. Among new options can be found the Sure-Track anti-lock brake system introduced in the Lincoln Continental Mark III and the Ford Thunderbird.

1971 Mercury Full-Sizes

The range of full-size Mercury cars is carried over from last year, except for the sad yet significant disappearance of the Marauder, its high-powered version the X-100, and all convertibles. New “351” and “400” V-8 engines replace the “390” 6.4-litre one previously offered.

1969 Mercury Full-Sizes

The largest Mercurys are entirely renewed, more than ever adopting a “Lincoln-like” overall style, with aggressively protruding wings and, on the most expensive models, hidden headlights à la Continental Mark III. The range is also refurbished. The plainer models are now comprised in the two Monterey series. The Marquis is a posh version, while the Marauder name returns for a sporty version. Station wagons are no longer considered a separate series.

1968 Mercury Full-Sizes

While the S-55, the Brougham and the peculiar Breezeway sedan all disappear from the 1968 range, Mercury full-size models are subjected to a mild face-lift that includes the transfer of the front turn signals front the bumper to the fore extremity of the front wings. The four-speed manual transmission is removed from the list of available mechanical parts.

1967 Mercury Full-Sizes

Once again the grille of the Mercury full-sizes is revised, with a central protruding part now dividing the front in two halves. The turn signals are moves again from the front wings to the bumper. The S-55 disappears as a separate series, but remains as an optional performance package, offered on both the two-door hardtop coupe and convertible versions of the Monterey, which includes the “428” 7.0-litre engine. On the other hand, two new series are added at the top of the range: the two-door Marquis and the four-door Brougham.

1966 Mercury Full-Sizes

After the dramatic 1965 restyle of its full-size line helped set a sales record, Mercury basically carries over its models for 1966. Their front end is slightly modified though, with a new die-cast grille and small wraparound turn signals, which replace the tall, slim ones seen last year. Two-door models see their roofs redesigned with an original concave rear window.

Mercury Monterey
The style of the Monterey is angular, and clearly related to the Lincoln Continental. The Monterey’s range includes six models, among them the original Breezeway sedan with its reverse-slant retractable backlight. The more conventional semi-fastback sedans have become the norm though, and lose their “Marauder” name this year. The high-powered “427” engines also disappear, to be replaced by similarly sized but more reasonable “428” V-8s.

1965 Mercury Full-Sizes

After four years, the slightly-smaller-than-full-size Mercurys retire, and their successors grow larger again. They are now built on a much longer chassis, and graced by the formal elegance of their new bodies. Another improvement comes from the coil suspension on all four wheels, which makes a new Mercury’s ride extremely smooth and comfortable.

Mercury Monterey
The style of the brand-new Monterey is angular, and clearly related to the Lincoln Continental - the connection is heavily exploited by Mercury advertisements this year. It indeed includes such details as edged front and rear wings, a bulged bonnet and a protruding grille centre. No less than six models are included in the Monterey’s range, though the original Breezeway is now limited to a single sedan and supplemented by more classical models.

2006 Mercury Monterey

In late 2003, Mercury returns to the minivan field with the Monterey, a rebadged Ford Freestar, but the vehicle soon proves to be a failure.

Mercury Monterey
While the Ford Freestar can be called a failure, its close relative, the Mercury Monterey, is nothing short of a catastrophe. Despite good safety records, Mercury’s minivan has seen its already poor sales falling to insignificant levels. The blame is to put on constant mechanical problems and an outdated design.

While the Ford Freestar can be called a failure, its close relative, the Mercury Monterey, is nothing short of a catastrophe. Despite good safety records, Mercury’s minivan has seen its already poor sales falling to insignificant levels. For model year 2007, the Monterey remains unchanged, except for the addition of a few more paint colours. Only a handful of cars will sport them: in November 2006, a few weeks after entering its fourth year of existence, the production of both the Freestar and the Monterey is stopped at Ford’s Oakville plant, where the two minivans were constructed.
