1968 DAF 44 and 55

Launched last year as the single 44 saloon, DAF’s new range substantially increases in size for 1968 with the introduction of an estate and, more significantly, of the 55, basically a 44 powered by a Renault engine, available as a saloon, then as an elegant coupe. Its valiant air-cooled twin having reached the limits of its development, DAF indeed turned to Renault instead of designing a new powerplant. As a result the French “Major” engine is now produced under licence in the Netherlands. Though the 55 is therefore the first of the company’s cars to be fitted with a liquid-cooled four, it remains a DAF without the shadow of a doubt, enjoying all the ease and efficiency of the in-house Variomatic transmission.

Fitting a larger, more powerful Renault engine under the bonnet of a DAF 44 to create the new 55 has required a few modifications to the basic car. These include a longer front end sporting a fake chromed grille, a new front suspension using torsion bars, and front disk brakes.

1977 DAF 46

Some DAF 46 remaining from last year’s production are sold during 1977. Volvo has stopped the production of this model, for it found it antiquated. This was the last DAF still being built, has the former DAF 66, its more powerful, modernized variant, is now sold as the Volvo 66, though still built in the Dutch factory in Born.

1976 DAF 46

In its last year in production, the DAF 46 is once again unchanged, though it has to be noted that the panel van is no longer offered. It is the very last automobile to bear the DAF name, as the 66 (basically the same car fitted with a four-cylinder engine of Renault origins) is now produced under the Volvo brand.

1975 DAF 44, 46 and 66

For 1975, DAF introduces an updated version of its 44, named 46. On the outside, differences are minimal, the 46 being identified by its two badges up front (“DAF” on the right of the front end, “46” on left) instead of the single badge on the left sported by the 44. Under the skin, the 46 adopts a rear De Dion axle similar to the one already fitted to the larger 66. Transmission is though entrusted to the Variomatic gearbox, but this time is connected to the rear wheels through a single rubber belt instead of two; this system forces the adoption of a conventional differential, while previous DAF could do away with one. These modifications, plus improvements brought to the passenger compartment (carpeting, reclining seats, modified dashboard), makes the 46 a heavier car than its predecessor. As its flat-two engine is unchanged, DAF engineers have used different gear ratios to insure that the 46 has the same top speed as the 44 but, by doing this, they negatively affected acceleration.

Though the 44 has been replaced by the new 46, it remains on sale for 1975, DAF stating that it is now considered an entry-level model to its range. Actually, these are simply unsold models that remains on hand after 1974; this model will definitely disappear once these stocks are exhausted.

The year’s biggest news at DAF however comes on New Year 1975, as Volvo takes control of the company with the promise of maintaining in the Netherlands the production of the small DAF models (which should be renamed Volvo over time).

1974 DAF 44 and 66

The DAF 44 continues unchanged from the previous year’s models, but the DAF 66 Marathon is now fitted with a larger 1.3-litre four, still produced under licence from Renault - a similar block powers cars ranging from the R5 to the R12. Though output is similar to the previous 1.1-litre, the new engine offers more torque and less noise. Finally, DAF has designed a light all-purpose vehicle for the Dutch army, the 66 YA.

DAF 66 YA
The military version of the DAF 66 uses its platform, all of its mechanical parts and the front part of its body, but looks all different from the firewall back. It has been designed as a light liaison vehicle to replace the old Jeep, to expensive to maintain for such a basic role. Unfortunately, the 66 YA’s Variomatic transmission suffers when the car is in the careless hands. Frequent maintenance brings the Dutch military to limit their order to 1201 vehicles, all delivered in 1974.

1973 DAF 44 and 66

All DAF 44s finally receive a long-awaited modern electrical system in 12 volts, instead of the antiquated 6 volts. The DAF 55 disappears, being replaced by a new modernized 66. Identified by its modern front end with black plastic grille, the DAF 66 uses a De Dion axle at the rear, allowing a better handling than the previous swing axle system, but increasing the weight of the car.

1971 DAF 44 and 55

The 1971 model year starts with a major modification of the DAF 55 coupe variant, which receives new doors replacing the previous frameless ones. Though elegant, the latter had a habit of allowing water into the passenger compartment during rainy days, while noise level at high speeds was equally unacceptable due to the same tendency of the frameless doors to let turbulent air in.

More is to come during the year.

After a dealer option aimed at improving the performances of its 55 has encountered a large success, DAF decides to officially include such a variant in its range. Called Marathon, this model, only available as a saloon, features a more powerful engine (new carburettor and higher compression ratio do the trick), power brakes, wider wheels and a specific exterior decoration. Note that the heavy-duty rear suspension that was proposed by the dealer option is not part of the Marathon’s equipment.

From August 1968, the DAF 55 is available as an estate, while the basic 44 becomes the Comfort, a replacement for the Standaard.

Later during January 1965, a “Marathon” performance kit is offered for installation by DAF dealers, its name chosen to honour DAF’s good performance in last year’s gruesome London-Sydney Marathon. This kit comprises a modified engine boosted to 65 bhp, new central exhaust pipe, modified rear suspension from improved handling, light alloy wheels and a tachometer.

1967 DAF 44

The ambition of designing a car that would prove a real success on the international stage has brought DAF to introduce a larger and more modern automobile than its Daffodil. Still, this new 44 closely follows the lines of its predecessor. It obviously retains the exclusive Variomatic transmission, the all-independent suspension and a version with enlarged stroke of its flat-two. In spite of being an all-new design by Giovanni Michelotti, the 44’s body also retains a silhouette similar to the Daffodil’s. Only available as a saloon, at least for the time being, the 44 is produced by DAF’s brand new Born factory, built with financial help from the Dutch government in return for a share in DAF’s capital.

1959 DAF 600

After some late-minute modifications, the DAF production starts in earnest in March 1959. As the cars are reserved to the Netherlands market, where no domestic production has existed since several decades, success is almost guaranteed, though this should not obscure the qualities of this cleverly designed little car with its ingenious Variomatic transmission.
